Hello, my name is Susie Garrett, I am a licensed clinical social worker. My specialty is working with children and families who struggle with trauma and other mental health issues. I grew up in the Denver area and have family who have also worked in the mental health field. I am passionate about mental health and overall well being. I believe that we all have various adversities in life and sometimes we need some extra support to get through difficult situations. Through my own challenges I learned about how important it is to have a person (or team) in your corner helping you through it all. I graduated from Lewis and Clark College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. My first jobs after college included working with children in an after school program providing educational enrichment activities. I then chose to work in a psychiatric hospital for children. I decided to pursue my masters in social work at Smith College School of Social Work in Massachusetts. Smith and Columbia were the first two social work programs in the United States. Smith continues to be a social work program focused on clinical social work with an emphasis on psycho-dynamic theories. After completing this program, I returned to Denver and worked in several community mental health programs in the metro area. I quickly saw how individuals and families quickly become disenfranchised and overwhelmed by mental health struggles and trauma. I wanted to help get these people and families back on a successful track. I have dedicated my life to this goal.
I started my own private practice in Aurora, CO in August 2014. I continue to provide individual, family and group therapy to people of all ages who need some support, encouragement and guidance. I continue to focus on working with children ages 5-18, but also work with adults. I completed EMDR training and am currently working towards getting my certificate. I am also working towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist. I am deeply passionate about ending the cycle of violence within family systems and encourage health and wellness in all the clients I interact with. I recognize how stigmatizing having a mental health diagnosis can be for a person and I truly emphasize overall health and wellness and being strength based.
